The Mason City Family YMCA is a not-for-profit organization first established in 1892 by a group of men focused on bible study and healthy living. They met in a law firm office in downtown Mason City.
In 1926, after purchasing ground and securing the support to build a facility on Pennsylvania Avenue, the YMCA opened its historic doors. This building served the community for 75 years. In the early 1970’s the YMCA and YWCA merged and kept the YMCA name. This merger made it possible to create a family setting within the YMCA by welcoming both men and women and their families into the facility.
In 1999, the YMCA and Mercy Medical Center formed the Mason City YMCA and Rehabilitation Center and the current facility was built at Monroe Ave and 19th St. SW. Opening in 2001, the facility was created to house sports medicine and aquatic therapy for the hospital and the operations of the YMCA.
